Getting married or registering a partnership in the Netherlands |
Who can get married / or register a partnership?
Every resident of the Netherlands who has reached the age of maturity (18 years) and is registered at a municipality. Your nationality is not relevant.
When you reside outside the Netherlands, you can only marry in the Netherlands if one of the partners possesses the Netherlands nationality or if one of the partners is a permanent resident of the Netherlands. Registration of intended marriage
When you intend to marry or register a partnership, you are required to register with 'Dienst Burgerzaken' of your municipality (if one or both persons reside(s) in the Netherlands).
For registration, it is advisable to check whether all your documents are complete and correct. This will be of great importance when you need foreign documents or in case you have been/ or are residing outside the Netherlands.
Documents
The documents you are required to present can vary, but in all cases you will be asked for:
- Proof of identification;
- Your birth certificate;
- Proof of residence and marital status.
If you are no longer a resident in the Netherlands (proof you have been de-registered with the municipality) you will need 'proof of residence' in New Zealand and 'proof of your single status'. This declaration can be issued by any consular mission in New Zealand. You need to provide documentation and a fee applies.
Notice of intended marriage
You can only marry or register a partnership after a legally required waiting period of two weeks after signing the marriage registration. Marriage and partnership registration should be effected within one year after registration.
